Imagine a metal…

It was precious thousands of years ago. It still is today.

Kingdoms rose, empires fell, fashions changed. Yet gold’s place in human history has always remained special.

But why?

Perhaps because of its colour, reminiscent of the sun. Perhaps because of how easily it can be shaped. Or perhaps because of its extraordinary resilience against time.

The first traces of gold

People have known gold since prehistoric times. Because it can be found in nature in metallic form, it became one of the first metals to be discovered and worked.

In ancient Egypt, gold was associated with the sun and immortality. The gold artefacts found in the tombs of pharaohs show that this metal represented not only wealth, but also sacredness.

Tutankhamun’s famous gold funerary mask is one of the most striking examples of this.

Anatolia’s golden heritage

Anatolia has been one of the important centres of jewellery craftsmanship for thousands of years.

In the Lydian period, coins made of gold and silver brought about a great transformation in the history of trade.

In the Ottoman era, gold found its place in palace jewellery, belts, ornaments and traditional decorative arts.

Gold was no longer just a precious metal; it was a cultural memory.

So why doesn’t gold tarnish?

Pure gold is a chemically very stable metal. Under normal conditions, it does not readily react with oxygen in the air.

This is why gold artefacts thousands of years old can still largely preserve their brilliance today.

However, the other metals in the gold alloys used in jewellery can cause a change of colour over time.

A note from Erzurum Kuyumcusu

For us, gold is not just a metal.

A bracelet a mother leaves to her daughter, a wedding band a couple chooses together, a jewellery box opened again years later…

For three generations, we have been part of these stories.

Because some values are not merely kept; they are passed from one generation to the next.
